Biography

Life sciences professor Jef Jaeger specializes in conservation biology, ecology, population biology, and phylogeography. In addition to research, his passions include teaching biological sciences to undergraduate students who are pursuing degrees outside of sciences.

Since 1991, Jaeger has published over 25 publications highlighting desert wildlife — including bighorn sheep, amphibians, and more — and climate change indicators in the American West. Jaegar's publications have been recognized by publications including Frontiers of Ecology and Evolution and ScienceDaily.

Jaeger has received numerous fellowships and awards throughout his career at 8kbet, including the College of Sciences' Outstanding Dissertation for 2006 and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Network For Environmental Management Studies (NEMS) Fellowship.

Bullfrog removal at Pakoon Springs, by multiple parties including the University of Arizona and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, began in 2010 and was completed in 2019, when the last bullfrogs were removed. After repeated surveys confirmed the bullfrogs were gone, Relict Leopard Frogs, raised in a captive breeding program at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, were finally released at Pakoon Springs in 2022. Follow-up surveys confirm that a self-sustaining population now thrives at Pakoon Springs.

This Sonoran Desert location has also seen an uptick in rental supply, with 23,249 listings in December 2022, up 47% year-over-year. These dynamics have pushed the area’s occupancy rate down 6%. A similar trend has been playing out in other desert destinations such as California’s Coachella Valley, where the Sonoran eventually meets the Mojave Desert, and in Marfa, Texas, in the Chihuahuan Desert.
